PlanePullWhat IS the actual Plane Pull?

The pull is a fun team competition to see which group can pull a Boeing 757 the fastest.  Teams are made up of 25 members, who all line up adjacent to a huge rope attached to the aircraft.  The starter signals when to start and starts the stopwatch.  After the team pulls the aircraft 12 feet, the stopwatch stops and the elapsed time is recorded as the team score.  Each team is then weighed (as a group) and assembles to have their team photo taken.

Trophies are awarded in the following categories:

Event Winner – a point system combining money raised and pull time
Most Money Raised
Fastest Pull (1st, 2nd and 3rd Place) & Slowest Pull
Lightest Team & Heaviest Team
Most Enthusiastic

Team incentives are also awarded for fundraising.
Teams can quality for a private tent at the event and the highest overall fundraising team gets a catered breakfast at their office.  Individual team members earn incentives based on the total amount of money they raise (ball caps, sweatshirts and duffle bags, plus gift cards for gas).

History Lesson…
The first-ever Plane Pull (world-wide) was held to benefit Special Olympics Virginia at Dulles International Airport in 1992, with eleven teams participating. Those eleven teams, lead by some of our law enforcement volunteers who were looking for a new and unique way to raise money and awareness for Special Olympics athletes, raised almost $15,000 – and started a phenomenon.  Who would have guessed that someone’s crazy idea to pit man against machine would skyrocket into a major fund raising venture for SO programs throughout the country?

Since then Plane Pulls held in Northern Virginia and Norfolk have raised more than $1,000,000 in the past fifteen years for athletes with intellectual disabilities throughout the state. There are similar Plane Pulls held throughout the year in Colorado, Maryland, Hawaii, Tennessee, and Texas that benefit Special Olympics programs in those states. The event is so popular in fact, that Special Olympics has the registered trademark on all Plane Pulls ® that take place!
